Rush blasts law; Daley defends it

Mayoral challenger Bobby Rush blasted Mayor Daley's anti-gangloitering ordinance Wednesday as "police-state tactics" that "makescapegoats and criminals of innocent people."

But Daley said the ordinance is such an important tool to fightcrime and make people feel safer that if the U.S. Supreme Courtstrikes it down, he will instruct city lawyers to draft a new onethat will pass constitutional muster.

"People have a civil right to walk down their block withoutbeing impaired by a gang (member) or dope dealer," Daley said."We don't think dope dealers have a right to hold a cornerhostage against communities, against families, children and seniorcitizens," Daley …
