FED:Hockey rules out false promises
SYDNEY, Aug 14 AAP - The coalition is not going to make promises in the last week of
the federal election campaign that it cannot deliver, opposition Treasury spokesman Joe
Hockey says.
A Nielsen poll in Fairfax newspapers on Saturday put Prime Minister Julia Gillard's
Labor party ahead by 53 per cent to the coalition's 47 per cent on a two-party preferred
basis.
This was a marked turnaround from the coalition's 51 per cent to 49 per cent a week earlier.
A separate Newspoll in The Australian newspaper on Saturday showed Labor would lose
key seats in Queensland and NSW but there was a big swing to the government in Victoria.
Mr Hockey said on Saturday that too much focus has been on the campaign process and
not enough on policy.
"I'm sure there will be new (policy) commitments," Mr Hockey told reporters in Sydney.
"But if someone thinks there is going to be a multi-billion dollar, big, enormous promise
from the coalition on the eve of the election that is going to be a game changer, I'm
sorry we are not going to make promises we cannot deliver.
"I will not allow us to do that.
"We are going to make promises that we can pay for."
