NSW: Murdered student's family received ransom demand: police

Police say the family of a 22-year-old Sydney woman whose body was found in the bootof her car yesterday received a ransom demand for $70,000.

University student VAY LINH PHUN was reported missing last Wednesday after she failedto return to her Earlwood home in Sydney's south.

Police discovered her body in the boot of her Volkswagen hatchback in West Street,Petersham, in Sydney's inner west, about 1pm yesterday.

Early post mortem results have revealed she died as a result of injuries to her neckat least 24 hours before her body was discovered.

Detective Superintendent BOB INKSTER says a friend of Ms PHUN had received a telephonecall and text messages demanding $70,000 in ransom.

Police have charged a 26-year-old Sydney man TRUNG SON HUNYH with demanding money withmenace over the extortion attempt.

He's been remanded in custody by the Parramatta Bail Court and will front Central LocalCourt tomorrow.
