VIC: Oppn proposes national footy tipping competition

A national AFL footy tipping competition, expected to generate $30 million in revenue
annually within three years, has been urged by Victoria's Labor opposition.

Opposition Leader STEVE BRACKS says the plan, under which 15 per cent of the revenue would
be spent on public hospitals, would include an elite sports medicine centre in Melbourne.

The Herald Sun reports that half of the revenue would be paid in dividends and 24 per cent
would go to the state government.

The rest would be shared by the Australian Football League and the successful tenderer.

Mr BRACKS has told ABC Radio that winners could get $300.

And he says the government share of the pool -- estimated at $4.42 million in the first
year -- would go to public hospitals, sports medicine and women's and junior sport.

He says he will present a private member's bill to introduce the National Football Tipping
Act 1999 into state parliament on September 21.

AFL operations manager IAN COLLINS says the idea has a lot of merit.
