WEST BANK SETTLEMENT BECOMES JEWS' REFUGE.(Main)

Not so long ago, during the height of the intifada, commuters from this Jewish settlement often ran a gauntlet of stone- throwing Palestinian youths on their way home from work in Tel Aviv.

It was a harrowing, dangerous drive back in 1988.

But with Tel Aviv in Saddam Hussein's Scud missile sights, the drive to Ariel has become a flight to safety for Tel Avivans hankering for the security of the West Bank.
