Oak Park has reached an agreement with Commonwealth Edison andNicor Gas to clean up private homes and village land near acontaminated park.
Under the deal, the companies will test and clean all the homesaround Barrie Park on Garfield and Lombard, village administratorCarl Swenson said.
The village has been fighting the utilities for more than a yearto clean up carcinogenic coal tar contamination around the park. Thesite had served as a manufactured gas plant by predecessors of theutilities from the 1890s until the 1920s.
Residents who live near the 3.5-acre park applauded the village'sagreement, which was negotiated in near secrecy.
